A City Document Connects Ukraine’s Independence, the War, and Dallas’s Ukrainian Community
On August 24, Ukraine Independence Day in Dallas was marked by the presentation of a Special Recognition signed by Mayor Eric Johnson to members of the city’s Ukrainian community.
The recognition acknowledges Ukraine’s independence, Russia’s full-scale invasion, and the contributions of Ukrainian Americans to Dallas and the United States. It also recalls the Dallas City Council’s unanimous March 2022 resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Deionte Harvey, Coordinator with the City of Dallas Office of Government Affairs, presented the signed document during a meeting with Chrystya Geremesz, a founding member of the Ukrainian American Society of Texas, and Tamara Velsher, president of the U.S.–Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce.
The original document will remain with the Ukrainian American Society of Texas, the oldest Ukrainian community organization in Dallas.
The presentation was part of a weekend of Ukrainian Independence Day events across North Texas, adding an official City of Dallas recognition to this year’s commemoration.
